Santacruz Medical Social Association
The Santacruz Medical and Social Association (SMSA), established in 1963, is one of the oldest associations of its kind. Today, we are a thriving community of over 700 members, comprising medical practitioners who either reside in or practice in Santacruz.
Our aim is to hone professional medical knowledge and skills along with cultivating a spirit of professional camaraderie and friendship among our members and their families through a variety of academic and other socio-cultural activities. These include the annual academic conference along with online and offline scientific sessions focused at medical education and updation of knowledge and skills, also plan and execute domestic and international trips, as well as celebrations of festivals such as Diwali and Navratri.
Our commitment to social responsibility is reflected in our regular medical camps for the underprivileged in rural areas, blood donation drives, and our efforts to support humanitarian causes, particularly during times of crisis such as natural disasters. Through these diverse initiatives, SMSA continues to have meaningful connections, promote lifelong learning, and uphold our commitment to both the medical fraternity and the wider community. We take pride in the vibrant spirit of togetherness that defines our association and look forward to building on this legacy for generations to come.
On the 26th Jan., 1963 some leading Family Physicians of Santacruz Dr. Kumud Patel, Dr. Mangaldas Desai, Dr. T.P. Vyas, Dr. Khodani, Dr. Maltiben Mehta and Dr. Ajay Hora were in Matheran on a short holiday. While returning by the Mini Train, an idea crystallized in the minds of those Doctors and in the small compartment was conceived — THE SANTACRUZ MEDICAL CLUB ON 27th Jan., 1963.
It took 4 month of meticulous work to form the constitution of the club in which Dr. Madhoop Patel was actively involved.
On the 19th May, 1963 the Santacruz Medical Club as it was then called, was inaugurated by Dr. V.D. Arora at the residence of Dr. Kumud Patel. In the first Managing Committee the President was Dr. C.S. Thakar, Secretaries Dr. Aswani & Dr. K. T. Sukkawala, Treasurer Dr. Sharmishtha Patel & Members Dr. Kumud Patel, Dr. I. C. Jadawala & Dr. Ajay Hora.
The name was later changed to SANTACRUZ MEDICAL SOCIAL ASSOCIATION. This was finally registered with the Registrar of Societies Greater Bombay on 11th March, 1968. Dr. Somesh Vaishnav’s role in putting it on a sound legal footing was commendable.
